Opened 22nd September 1930 by the Lord Mayor Alderman Angus Rhodes.
First film shown was Rookery Nook

"The Italian Renaissance style of design is employed. Two million bricks have been used and 1,00 tons of steel in the construction. The walls are lined with hair felt and covered with damask (by horner). There is an expanding screen and movable stage"

The name was changed from the New Victoria to the Gaumont in 1950.
Closed on 30th November 1968 for refurbishment - last film was Rio Grande.
It re-opened on 21st August 1968 as the Odeon Twin showing Funny Girl (Odeon 1) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Odeon 2)
