Sculptor : John Adams-Acton (1834-1910)
The elaborate canopy was designed by Lockwood and Mawson and was carved by
the Westminster firm of Farmer and Brindley who were responsible for
the monarchs outside Town Hall. The statue itself was carved from a block
of white Carrara marble which originally weighed about 14 tons. It was unveiled
on Saturday 1st August 1874 by the seventh Duke of Devonshire
The statue was originally located in front of the Town Hall but was moved
to it's present site inside the Norman Arch entrance to Lister Park and was
unveiled for a second time on 17th August 1896 |
